Nigeria Economic Challenges Highlighting the Need to Exploit Gold

With a population of 160 million people recorded in 2011 and a poverty headcount of 62.6% Nigeria is reportedly the largest country in Africa making up 47% of West Africa’s population. It is also the biggest oil exporter in Africa, with the largest natural gas reserves in the continent. According to the 2012 estimates, the non-oil sectors contribution include 30% in agriculture, 43% in industry and 26% in services. This short report looks at the Nigeria’s economic performance throughout the years highlighting the country’s potential in gold mining and its need to address the current economic challenges to stimulate local development and FDI attraction.
